Savory French Onion Grilled Cheese

This French onion grilled cheese sandwich combines sweet caramelized onions and melted cheese to create a dish that you’ll never resist. Ingredients

  • 2 cups yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ cup beef broth
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 4 ounces Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 4 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil


Steps

  1. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add onions, salt, and sugar; sauté until caramelized (20-25 minutes), stirring occasionally.
  3. Pour in beef broth and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  5. Preheat a griddle or skillet over medium heat and add olive oil.
  6. Spread Dijon mustard on one side of each slice of bread (optional).
  7. Layer 1 slice of bread with a generous portion of the cheese, followed by the caramelized onions, then more cheese.
  8. Top with another slice of bread, mustard side down.
  9. Cook each sandwich until golden brown and cheese is melted, about 3-5 minutes per side.
  10. Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
